VW was the UK’s best-selling brand in October with 9,052 registrations, down 25 percent. BMW was No. 2 with 7,778 sales, down 28 percent. Kia was No. 3 with a volume of 7,436, up 22 percent. At No. 4, Mercedes-Benz fell 37 percent to 6,856, ahead of rival Audi, which rounded out the top five at 6,841 units, down 40 percent.

Other brands that had steep drops included Ford (-47 percent), Toyota (-36 percent) and Vauxhall (-26 percent).

The Polo was the best-selling passenger vehicle in October.

New-car sales plunged across Europe as automakers contend with the worst supply crisis for the industry in decades. Registrations fell 36 percent in Italy, 35 percent in Germany, 31 percent in France and 21 percent in Spain.

Through October, UK sales rose 2.8 percent to 1.42 million.
